Matthew Cassel is a photographer and journalist with Al Jazeera English. Born in Chicago in 1982, Cassel has spent most of his time living and traveling throughout the Middle East since the age of 21. In 2006 he co-founded Picture Balata, a media school for youth from Balata refugee camp in the West Bank. Cassel interned with VII photo agency in Paris in 2005 and was one of 100 emerging photographers selected to attend the Eddie Adams Workshop in 2006. From 2007-2011, he was the assistant editor of the online publication The Electronic Intifada. Cassel speaks near fluent Arabic.
