Matthew Cassel is a freelance photographer and journalist from Chicago currently based in Beirut, Lebanon. Born in 1982, Cassel has spent most of his time living and traveling throughout the Middle East since the age of 21. In 2006 he co-founded a media school for youth from Balata refugee camp in the West Bank called Picture Balata. Cassel has also interned with VII photo agency in Paris in 2005 and attended the Eddie Adams Workshop in 2006. Since 2007, he has worked as the assistant editor of the online publication The Electronic Intifada. Cassel speaks near fluent Arabic.
